Installed in 2001 to provide a transition area between the gardens around the house and those around the office and stable block. A gravel path was installed and the pergola constructed with reclaimed hand clamped brick pillars and Iroko cross beams.

The main climber is Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’, creating a beautiful white scented tunnel in May. Later, Lonicera periclymenum ‘Graham Thomas’ provides yellow flowers and delicious evening scent, combing with the purple of Clematis ‘Jackmanii Superba’. The yellow flowers of Clematis orientalis ‘Bill Mackenzie’ carry the display on, with the seed heads providing interest in the autumn.

The surrounding borders are planted in a blue and yellow colour scheme.

The Spring display is of pink lily flowered tulip ‘Maytime’ associating with the pink of a Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree) and the nearby magenta flowers of Bergenia ‘Sunnningdale’. Pink foxgloves are followed by the main summer display of hardy Salvia, Achillea, Phlomis russeliana, Erigeron, Cephalaria, Delphinium ‘Purple Velvet’, Anthemis ‘Sauce Hollandiase’, Digitalis ferruginea and Hemerocallis ‘Hyperion’. In a good year, Eremurus ‘Cleopatra’ and ‘Pinnochio’ put on a spectacular display. In late summer Agapanthus, Aster frikartii ‘Monch’, Echinops and a second flush of Anthemis fill the borders.

Most of the above plants have good structure and seed heads and stand right through the winter, especially the Phlomis and the tall slender upright stems of the rusty perennial foxglove, Digitalis ferruginea. Golden fastigiate Irish Yew and tightly clipped spheres of English Yew provide year round structure.

Towards the house, an old Laburnum puts on a splendid display of golden yellow in April.
